Perfectly, Imperfect

In my last post, Living My Life On Purpose, I shared with you that there are some changes coming to His Girl Friday. As I mentioned in the post, I’ve learned a lot this summer and I’m excited to bring some of that inspiration to my readers! Let me start with who I am and what this blog is all about. (I know this probably seems like something I should have done in my first blog post, but hey, better late than never- right?)

Who I am: I know, this is where I’m supposed to say that I’m a wife and mother and I enjoy gardening and long walks on the beach, right? blech. No thank you. I am a wife, and I am a mother, and I do enjoy those things, but come on…I’m so much more than that!

I love being outside. I love cooking and reading and yoga and running and shooting a roll of film. I love watching old movies and trying new things. I love exploring new places and writing about my experiences. I love making my husband laugh. I love teaching my oldest son how to do things and watching my youngest son watch his big brother. I love music of all kinds. I value coffee as highly as I value oxygen. I believe in love and truth and a God who created and embodies both. I enjoy learning how to do things myself, especially when it comes to cooking “from scratch” and making natural body products. My relationships with others are incredibly valuable to me, and nothing makes me happier than reaching out and connecting with others. I’m a vegetarian, bad with directions, and I love, love jokes.

What does “His Girl Friday” mean? Well, specifically, this blog is named after one of my favorite movies of the same name. You can read more about that here. But even more than that, a “his girl friday” is:

A ‘go to’ girl; a female who will help you get things taken care of; a female you can rely on when you are in need of extra assistance; a female who acts as a ‘jack of all trades’ and is capable of doing almost anything; a girl you can count on when you are overwhelmed with your own chores and the duties must be done; a girl who does most of the leg work on a project, but never takes (or gets) credit. (Urban Dictionary).

That, in a nutshell is who I want to be for you! I want His Girl Friday to be a fun and helpful resource for you on a weekly basis. The subject matter will always be changing, but hopefully the fun and helpful factor will remain the same!

With that said….fun and useful are only fun and useful if the information provided is both affordable and applicable. I’ll be honest with you. As a blogger, I like to follow other bloggers. However, all I can say is – HOLY COW! Am I the only person that sees these people with their expensive clothes, their trendy living spaces and their super complicated crafts and thinks, “that is way out of my league”? I mean, sure, it is great to see other people doing things just a few steps ahead of you for inspiration, but when they are like flying to the moon and you are stuck hitchhiking through backwoods Ohio, then that is just plain depressing.

So this brings me to my final point. I promise, here on His Girl Friday, to always keep my content relevant, accessible, and practical. I will never feature an outfit with $200 jeans (I don’t own any), I will never display photos of my perfectly designed New York loft (again, I don’t own one of those) and I will always try to keep the information I bring to you each week something that almost anyone can do, on any budget, for any lifestyle. My life isn’t perfect, but I’m hoping my imperfections are what keep His Girl Friday real, and are what keep my readers coming back for more.

Here is a great example! For my final thought this week, I will leave you with a great new way to tie your scarf! No assembly or purchase required. Just watch the tutorial from Pure Wow and and enjoy!

The braided scarf. Super cute. Super easy. Outfit deets: hat, thrift store; t-shirt dress, thrift store; scarf, Charming Charlies
A silk scarf works great for this braided method. You can tie it a little tighter which results in even more detail. It also creates a dressier look that is great for work!
Silk scarf braided and worn casually.
