Room Tour: How We Laid Out Our Combined Living Room and Dining Room

I enjoyed sharing with you a little sneak peak into my home when I did a room tour of our family room last month. Today, I’ll give you a glimpse of how we’ve (attempted) to make the most of our fairly awkward living room.

Our living room is extreeeemely long, and flows right into our family room to create a large “L” shape. The room that we currently use as our family room used to be the dining room, but we simply outgrew it. Plus, with the living room being so long, we decided that the best way to make the most of the space was to turn it into a combined living room and dining room. It has been nice to have the space utilized this way, as it allows for seamless transition from dining to relaxing, and also provides additional entertaining/eating space when we host larger groups.

We’ve lived in this house just a little over three years, now, and it’s taken us every bit of that time (and a ton of late night rearranging sessions) to land on a layout that is both visually pleasing and functional. Take a look!

As you can see, to the right is our family room that I toured in my last “room tour” post, and to the left is the combined dining room/living room. The curtains you see beside the gray couch help to divide off the space for a sense of privacy without having to put up walls.

Our dining room. The table was gifted to us by friends, and the chairs came from a vintage card table set that my grandmother gave to me. As you can see, we have carpet in out “dining room.” It is certainly not ideal for little ones, but new flooring won’t be in the budget for a few more years.

When we moved into our home, this was one solid wall, meaning you could only enter or exit the kitchen (the doorway that you see here) through the old dining room. Mike opened up this wall to create more flow and I love the improvement. The white wall where the boys’ picture hangs is our stair well to the basement.

We discovered this chest in our attic! I use it to store linens such as seasonal table clothes and napkins, but I also clear off the top to use the chest as a buffet for serving guests….

I just wanted a close-up of the pumpkins and this adorable photo that I took of the boys last fall ;-). Soon, I’ll have this larger photo flanked by two matching, smaller frames with additional family photos.

One of my favorite spots in our house. I love sitting in front of this window to read, blog, or hold my babies. The green chair is a hand me down, the table was thrifted from Goodwill, and the retro looking orange chair was a clearance item at a furniture store that we picked up shortly after moving into our home.

This piano was a family hand me down. I don’t really play anymore, although I can still read music and Theo and I will sit down to pick out tunes from time to time. I love having the piano for sentimental reasons, and it occasionally gets played by a musical friend or by the the boys. I would love for one of my kids to play someday. Or who knows, maybe I’ll take lessons again when the kids are older ;-). The window is an old barn window that we purchased at an antique store. The light is from IKEA. The ukulele was given to me by my maternal grandmother. It was her father’s.

Mike made both the beautiful pallet shelf and the chest that sits below it. The print on the wall is thrifted. The print on the shelf is from my Uncle. I took the black and white photo of my grandfather that you see. Not only is it special to me because of the subject, but also because that was the first roll of film I ever shot and developed. It was taken with his camera which he gave me when I took an interest in photography.

I just had to include this print. My good friend made it for me for my 30th birthday and it is a prized possession. This is my favorite verse – words that I constantly pray over myself and my family. But the print also hangs next to our front door, as a reminder of the power, love, and sound mind that God has for all of us. It hangs as a silent prayer for all who enter our door.
