Earlier this summer, I did something I’ve never done before. I ordered a few items of clothing based on my actual measurements. It was humbling to get out the old sewing measuring tape and to see in black and white your body’s actual circumference, but the result was clothing that fit like a dream and is now my favorite pieces I own. I ordered everything from ASOS, and have provided links to the items/similar items.
This little experiment showed me that it pays to buy things that fit. I know this is a total Duh moment and I also know that Stacey and Clinton would be rolling their eyes at me if they could hear me say that, but old habits die hard and it’s even harder to do the right thing when shopping has become less and less enjoyable over the years.
I think my capsule wardrobe experience has really changed me. I don’t want to go shopping just for fun. I can’t tell you the last time I bought something just because I wanted it (as opposed to something I needed). It’s been freeing to be, well, freed from the desire to shop all the time. The love for going out and shopping just isn’t there anymore. I still love clothes and fashion, but now I’m just more choosy about what I buy and wear. I want to love what I purchase and love how it makes me feel.
I still have some work ahead of me to purge clothes that I no longer wear. But I’m proud of myself for changing how I approach adding clothes to my life…even if I still find it hard to change how I approach getting rid of clothes form my life. 😉
Wearing: These jeggings.
I cannot get enough of these super soft, stretchy, look-good-with-anything jeggings from ASOS. They are high waisted, zip up with a button closure, and have pockets. They look dressy enough for date night, but throw on a tank top and they are perfect for running errands. They look GREAT with any type of shoe. I wear them weekly.
I almost didn’t keep these skinny jeans when I first ordered them from ASOS. They were just so different from anything I’ve worn before. I wasn’t sure about the whole slip on concept for jeans. I don’t own/wear leggings outside of my yoga pants and I was afraid these would end up looking too athleisure.
I’m SO glad I gave them a shot, though, because other than a pair of distressed denim that my friend gave me, these are the only jeans I wear. I love the high waist. I love that they hit right at the ankle. They are perfect for summer sandals but will be great to tuck into my booties for fall and my tall boots for winter. The only con is that these jeggings are sized s-m-l, and I had to kind of shoot in the middle since my length size is larger than my waist size. So…they are a tad big around the waist, but I just wash them and throw them in the dryer frequently to keep them from looking loose. If you find that you prefer actual sized pants, I saw these adorable mid-rise skinnies that look like a great choice.
Wearing: similar dress here
This dress has become my go-to dress for the summer. It’s light and breezy and beautiful and looks great for an evening at a vineyard or a family dinner in the city. I love how it looks and I love how it makes me feel. I’ve paired it with a sweater for cooler nights, and because of the length and color, I plan on wearing this beautiful thing well into fall.
This DRESSSSSS! You guys. I don’t know that I’ve ever loved a piece of clothing as much as I love this dress. It’s like wearing a piece of art. It is stunning in person and makes me feel so beautiful. Clothing like that is few and far between, so I know I’ll treasure this piece for a long time to come. I love the print. I love the bell sleeves. I love the way the waist flairs out and give a defined shape without being tight. It’s effortlessly beautiful and I’m already planning the next night out where I can take this baby for a spin. So far, I’ve always paired it with my beloved Tom’s wedges that Mike got me for my birthday a few years back, but, I think it will look adorable with my Børn boots for fall.
I have all the pants I need for this fall and winter. I still have a lot of my dressier dresses and skirts from the days when I used to get up and go to work away from the house, but I’m keeping my eye out for a dress and skirt that that work with my new life as a sahm and homeschooling momma. I’ve got my eye on this smock dress (those colors! that shape!) and this adorable midi skirt. I am in LOVE with the navy, those bows, and how cute it looks with a tee.
What about you? What are you wearing on repeat these days? What is on your shopping list for fall and winter?
