What We Tell Our Daughters

I have a daughter, and I think she is the most beautiful little girl in all the world. She absolutely delights me.

The other day, we were getting ready together. I noticed her soft, round little features. I noticed the way she crinkled up her nose to smile. I noticed her confidence as she stuck her belly out and look in the mirror. I noticed her contentment with picking clothes she liked, detached from any sort of expectation of how they looked on her body. And I thought with a sinking feeling, not for the first time, that I wished I could bottle up this confidence for her and help her keep it forever.

The topic of body image scares me for her. Continue reading “What We Tell Our Daughters”

My Skincare Routine

Talking about my skincare routine today, aka “how I wash my face.” Riveting, no?

Still, I don’t do your typical face wash routine so I thought I’d share a little bit about what I use, how I use it, and why! Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a blogpost full of curve balls, thrilling emotions, and suspense!

Just kidding. It’s not going to be any of those things. But it should be fun! Here goes.

///

I wash my face using the oil cleansing method. I should stop right here and mention a little history about my face.

I’ve never had acne. Please don’t hate me, I have plenty of other annoying-horrible physical struggles, acne just isn’t’ one of them. I am, however, incredibly greasy. My pores are huge. And I’m prone it dark circles under my eyes and redness on my cheeks. I also tend to not wear makeup. There really isn’t a great reason for this, other than the fact that I just feel like I look WEIRD in makeup. I love lipstick and will wear that fairly regularly. I wear mascara every day. Other than that, I don’t really wear much. Because I have fairly even skin I can get away without too much makeup. But because I have oily skin, it doesn’t really matter if I wear makeup or not — it still looks oily. Such is life, people.

I’ve used all kinds of skincare products in the past. Probably many of the same ones you’ve used or are currently using. Many would work ok enough, but they would often leave my cheeks way too dry and would do little to shrink the crater-sized holes that are my gaping pores.

I learned about the oil cleansing method a few years back when I was trying to get rid of as many store bought products as possible and switch to more natural, homemade, and simple products. Although it sounds crazy to use oil on your face, in fact, it’s MAGIC! Just kidding. It’s not magic. It is science, though! Or more specifically, chemistry.

Oil cleanses oil because as we may or may not remember from chemistry class (I remember nothing other than our tie-dye project), like dissolves like.

The key ingredient to the oil cleansing method is castor oil. Castor oil is what does the heavy lifting for your skincare. Many people say that castor oil will leave your skin in better condition than it finds it, and I tend to agree. It’s incredible. Continue reading “My Skincare Routine”

Today I wanted to share with you a quick, easy, and inexpensive recipe for a DIY coffee body scrub. In fact, if you are a coffee drinker, I bet you already have most of these ingredients in your pantry!

Five Things

1. My boys played in the rain last night and it brought so much joy to my heart to watch them run and play and get absolutely soaked and muddy. Some of my best and most vivid memories as a kid are of playing in the rain with my brother. Childhood can be so magical, especially when we don’t put the pressure on kids or ourselves to make it into something specific. Kids are masters at finding the fun.

2. I read this and it just kind of made me cry, especially this part:

“There’s no mirror in your way when you’re laughing and smiling and happiness is leaking out of you. You would know exactly how bright and beautiful you are if you saw yourself in the moments where you are truly yourself.”

My Beauty Uniform: Sarah Hider

I met Sarah Hider, Miss Ohio 2015, at a fashion show I recently attended. Sarah has a bubbly and friendly personality and instantly makes you feel like you’ve known her for years. She is well spoken with enviable public speaking skills and knows how to handle herself in front of a crowd. Oh, and did I mention she is gorgeous? So. Pretty. The night I met her, she was wearing this hot pink coat that I’m still thinking about. Love.IMG_2765IMG_2827

I asked Sarah to be a guest contributor and she graciously obliged. Today, she is sharing her take on all things beauty and fashion – enjoy! Continue reading “My Beauty Uniform: Sarah Hider”

Five Things

1. My husband is home on summer break (he is a teacher). Instead of getting a part time job for the summer like he has in the past, though, he is striking out on his own. He created his own business, Basic Elements By Mike, back when Beatrice was born in November, and is taking this summer to give it 100% of his attention to see where it goes. It’s been fun having him work from home, and I’m so excited to see where this new venture takes him. He is truly a talented craftsmen, a creative designer, and all around one of the most talented people I’ve ever met.

2. Oh, you know me. I just love multi-tasking with my food; a little for my body, a little for my face! Seriously though, I once talked to someone who said she wouldn’t put anything on her body that she wouldn’t put in it. The point being that she wanted to be as diligent about keeping her skincare products free of synthetic, harmful ingredients as she was with her food. It makes sense to me. I love the idea of incorporating the items in my cupboard into my beauty routine! It’s simple, good for my body, and inexpensive. I enjoyed reading this article about 8 Ways You can Use Coconut Oil on your body. I’m going to give the hair treatment a try. I will not be using it as a face highlighter, however. Momma has enough shine as it is, thank you very much.  Continue reading “Five Things”

My Beauty Uniform: Deb

Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to my dear friend, and our guest contributor for the My Beauty Uniform series, Deb. She is the wife of the pastor of our church, is a talented pianist who gives lessons in her home, and has two children. I love her heart. I love her sassy style. I love her passion for faux fur. She has some great thoughts on beauty and style and I know you’ll enjoy reading what she has to say.

Describe your morning/evening skincare routine:

Well, lets just get real right out of the gate… I do nothing at night for my skin. (Insert gasp from all your readers). I go to bed with my make up on, maybe with the hopes that I will look like every movie star who wakes up to beautiful tossed hair, flawless skin and fresh breathe. Actually, the reality is I am lazy and just want to jump in bed by the time 10:30 rolls around. On a rare occasion I may use a Norwex beauty clothe to simply wash off the day’s gunk.  Continue reading “My Beauty Uniform: Deb”

My Beauty Uniform: Briana

I’m so excited to introduce you to my good friend Briana and her gorgeous face. She is my first guest-contributor for my new series, My Beauty Uniform. Briana is a momma of two little boys, makes and sells all kinds of amazing things (like my all time favorite “man soap”), and is one of the most  stunningly beautiful women I’ve ever seen. Enjoy!

Describe your morning/evening skincare routine:

I will start with my evening routine first because it’s the one I put more focus on. First I like to exfoliate with hot water and any natural essential oil scented soap I have available. I have large pores and to clean them out I need to scrub my face with something very abrasive; I use a luffa for this. I have had a lot of success with my homemade face mask consisting of Bentonite clay and vinegar, and I leave that on for about 15-20 minutes. Next I love to dap a little vitamin E oil just under and on top of my eyes. Before I discovered vitamin E oil, I used cocoa butter really just anything with the most emollient properties.

Morning routine – Splash of cold water! (more like a reality check). Continue reading “My Beauty Uniform: Briana”
