Show Me How You Hygge

Have you heard of it?

I’m so in love with this Danish concept and, truth be told, it’s offered some real inspiration for my home and life this winter. The Dane’s created the concept as a way to survive the cold, dark days of winter. Sound familiar? Can I get an amen??? I mean, pass the therapy light and extra large cup of coffee and count me in cause this girl needs her Hygge.

So what is it, you might be asking?

According to the adorable website, Hygge House, Hygge is:

Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish word that is a feeling or mood that comes from taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary, every day moments more meaningful, beautiful or special. Whether it’s making coffee a verb by creating a ritual of making it then lingering over a cup to a cosy evening in with friends to the simple act of lighting a candle with every meal. Hygge is being aware of a good moment whether it’s simple or special.

Some refer to hygge as an “art of creating intimacy” (either with yourself, friends and your home). While there’s no one English word to describe hygge, several can be used interchangeably to describe the idea of hygge such as cosiness, charm, happiness, contentedness, security, familiarity, comfort, reassurance, kinship, and simpleness.

Thursday Things I Love: FOOD

I’ve really enjoyed the menu I put together for this week. It’s been healthful, fun to make, and even better to eat. I’ve been cooking mostly out of The Smitten Kitchen cookbook which I highly recommend you grab yourself a copy of asap. It’s full of delicious recipes that your family is sure to enjoy. I’ve included some photos of the things I’ve made out of the SK cookbook, but I won’t be able to link to any of those recipes. Everything that I made from Pinterest, however, I’ll link up for you to Pin and enjoy later!

Take a bite, I mean, take a look!

Vegan Sticky Sesame Cauliflower “Wings” with Black Bean and Pineapple Rice

Ok, I was super skeptical of the cauliflower wings, mostly because I feel like a lot of these recipes that try to make cauliflower taste like mash potatoes or chocolate cake or whatever are just the worst. Buuuut. The picture on Pinterest won me over and WOW, let me tell you, was this a great recipe! It does take some work to dip each bite in the batter, but following the instructions pays off big time.

I paired it with my favorite rice recipe from one of the best cookbooks I’ver ever owned – Supermarket Vegan. Even if you aren’t vegan, this cookbook is fabulous for those who are looking for tasty but inexpensive ways to get more veggies into your diet.  Continue reading “Thursday Things I Love: FOOD”

Our Family’s Favorite Fall Recipes

I love summer cusine, but isn’t there somthing so cozy and nostalgic about the food we prepare and serve this time of year? The cinnamony smell of pumpkin baked goods. The sizzle of fresh greens on the stove. The satisfying taste of a perfectly flakey, buttery crust on a veggie filled pot pie.

I’m hungry just thinking about it.

Thanks to a suggestion from my dear friend, Diane, I’m sharing with you some of my family’s favorite recipes that I make each fall. I hope you’ll give a few of these a try and let me know what you think! Continue reading “Our Family’s Favorite Fall Recipes”

Thursday Things I Love: Splash Pads, Paddle Boats, and Fresh Herbs

This week was full of essential summer activities and I’ve loved it. It’s been hot. We’ve been near the water a ton. I took an awesome yoga class. I’ve made and eaten a ton of great food. We’ve spent some great time together as a family. And I even cleaned my house. Wait. That’s a lie. My house is a totally disaster. But the rest of the things are true! Who needs a clean house when you have a summer bucket list of actives that you are scrambling to accomplish before everyone goes back to school? Not this girl. Cleaning can wait. Take a look at some of the things I loved from the week: Continue reading “Thursday Things I Love: Splash Pads, Paddle Boats, and Fresh Herbs”

Five Things

1. This week, I went to the movie theatre for a girls night with my good friend Sheila. I haven’t seen a movie in the theatre for yeeeeears! It was kind of the best thing ever. Date nights with your bestie are just the best, aren’t they?

2. Next week I’m going to make these delicious looking lavender cupcakes…using my home grown lavender! hashtag, excited.

3. My aunt is having  little get together tonight. I’m looking forward to seeing some family who is coming in from out of town. I plan on making this Roasted Butternut, Kale, and Cranberry Couscous salad. My friend made it for us last weekend and it’s delicious!  Continue reading “Five Things”

Thursday Things I Love: New Opportunities, Refrigerator Pickles, and Little Shop Helpers

It’s been a funky week. Do you guys ever find yourself in a funk? That weird place where your emotions don’t quite know where to land? My husband and I had a wonderful time celebrating our eleventh anniversary this week, and bunch of really great things happened this week. And yet…blah. The funk. Why does that happen?

But speaking of Gilmore Girls….I just can’t event wait for the reboot. Can’t. Even. Wait.

But back to this week. it’s been a great week. I think I’m just feeling the impending pressure of still more change to come. It’s all good. Take a look at the things I love right now: Continue reading “Thursday Things I Love: New Opportunities, Refrigerator Pickles, and Little Shop Helpers”

Five Things

1. It’s Friday, and it feels like Friday. This week flew by yet carried the weight of a full week. The boys have been a handful and Bea has been fussy. But today, is Friday. We have fun plans for the weekend and I’m hoping it will be the refreshment we all need.

2. With this post nudging me to keep things simple and this post inspiring my wardrobe, I’m *attempting* to pack a small number of interchangeable items for our getaway. Stay tuned. If successful, I’ll share my minimal packing list with you. If unsuccessful, then, I guess it’s back to the drawing board. Continue reading “Five Things”

Thursday Things I Love: Babies On A Boat, Summer Eats, And A Toad Named Judy

Hey friends.

How is your summer going? I have to tell you, I’ve just been eating it up. Mike has been working from home. The boys have been playing outside every day. And I’ve been enjoying as much yoga/time in the sun/summer veggies/garden goodness as I can.

Here are a few things I’ve been loving lately: Continue reading “Thursday Things I Love: Babies On A Boat, Summer Eats, And A Toad Named Judy”

Thursday Things I Love: Tarts, Chubby Cheeks, and Leslie Knope

Well we’ve made it to Thursday. Last night, Mike and I watched the “Company Picnic” episode of The Office. It’s the one where Jim and Pam find out they are expecting. That episode gets me every dang time. I love that episode for one tiny scene with Michael though, too. He talks about how he was ok with not trying to force a reunion with ex-girlfriend Holly, saying that he thinks instead, they will just have a long story. I love that. I love that long-sightedness. Our stories really are long. It’s good to remember that. How easy is it for us to get caught in the today. The right-this-minute. And then we forget, this isn’t forever. We’ve got time. Our story isn’t over yet.

Here are a few other things I’ve loved from this past week… Continue reading “Thursday Things I Love: Tarts, Chubby Cheeks, and Leslie Knope”

What I Ate Last Week

live love to eat. LOVE. IT.

I was going through some old things the other night – some journals, scrapbooks, etc. – and was amazed to see how many of the memories I felt worthy of jotting down for all eternity where food related. Holiday meals described in great detail. Restaurant and cafe menus and napkins tucked in photo albums. And of course, lots and lots of pictures of me and my friends, you guessed it, eating.

Food is just SO great, you know? I love eating food. I love cooking food. I love gathering friends together for a meal that is 50% about the food and 50% about the community. The best way to feed a person’s soul is to first start by feeding their belly.

Last week I made some really great recipes that I thought would be fun to share. So, without further ado, I give you: What I Ate Last Week, Wednesday! Continue reading “What I Ate Last Week”
